Which of the following is Victor’s most irresponsible act:  his creation of such an ugly being, his abandonment of the Creature and neglect of the Creature’s education, his refusal to create a partner for the Creature, or his refusal to tell anyone (until Walton) what he had done?  Explain your choice.

Victors most irresponsible act throughout the novel is probably his abandonment of his creation. Victor is basically a parental figure to the creature, and by brining the creature into the world, yet abandoning him immediately, he has abandoned his “child”. Just like a child who grows up with out a parent, the creature dosen’t develop as one might wish, and is confused by the world. Had Victor acted responsibly and nurtured and taught his “child” the creature would have developed and grown in a completely different direction, and most likely developed a completely diffrent personality as well.

Hey guys! We are off to a good start here. I expect to see good comments and insightful perspectives. Dylan, I like what you said, and I especially like the comparision to a “child without a parent.” This concept leads to lots of debate about the balance between nature and nurture.

Victor’s downfall occurred when he abandoned the creature, because he was terrified. This showed that Victor never thought about the consequences of his actions, and he said he felt like “god.” God does not abandon those that he creates, nor would he not take care of those he has created. Victor left the creature confused and lost and he did not attempt to explain the situation to the creature.

I agree with Dylan in saying that Victor was very wrong to run away from the creature. He has brought this creature to life and needs to take responsibility for what he has done. Victor should have been a father-figure to the creature. This most likely would have prevented the creature from being so hostile. It goes hand-in-hand with my earlier comment about nature vs. nurture; Victor was not there to influence and teach the creature, therefore the creature did not know right from wrong.

I agree with Dylan, I think the most irresponsible thing that Victor did was to create the creature and then abandon him. Victor should have thought about what he was going to do with the creature once it was created instead of abandoning it, forcing it to learn everything in this new world by himself. With the knowledge that the creature has, it is easy to understand why he reacted the way he did with Victors family.

Good thinking going on here. Now, is there someone who could pick up looking at the other options? And, could anyone relate any of these irresponsiblities to something that is applicable to today’s world?

I think another irresponsible act of Victor was not speaking up for Justine when he knew that she did not kill William. He knew that it was the creature but didnt have the courage to speak up. He now lives with the guilt of creating William’s killer and not sticking up for someone innocent. so he is basically responsible for the loss of two innocent lives

This most irresponsible act that Victor did was abandoning his creature. Victor is the father figure of the creature and he abandoned him at birth. Because of this abandonment the creature runs wild and anger and hatred haunt him. If Victor had nourished the creature maybe the creature could have benefited society instead of harming it.

I think the most irresponsible thing that Victor did was creating the creature. Victor didn’t think about his future or the creature’s future. The only thing that Victor was thinking about was getting the job done, he didn’t think about the consequences of making the creature. Another thing that Victor did that was irresponsible was abandoning the creature. It seems like he wasn’t man enough to accept what he did and try to find a solution to the problem.

I agree with Dylan’s comments on Victor’s abandoment of the creature because Victor was so focused on the pursuit of knowledge that he forgot about what was going to happen after he brought the creature to life. After Victor ran away from his creation, the creature did not know what to do since his “father” abandon him; and he has to learn thing on his own to find Victor. Victor should have accepted the fact that he created something beautiful, although the creature looks grotesque, and educate him on the consequenses of life and death.

The age of Victor is a important part of this story. It is possible that if Victor had been older and wiser than this ordeal of him leaving and the monster terrorizing might not have happened. I think that he also did not do enough research on what he was doing and did not think about the consequences. Victor’s flaw in the beginning of the story is impatience.

Like most everyone in here, I agree with Dylan. As a parental advisor, Victor’s responsible for teaching the Creature things that he cannot learn from a book. Why did Victor even make the Creature if he wouldn’t take any responsibility for it? This makes me think of the problems in the world today. People are not fulfilling their duties as parents; as a result, the kids are leading a life of destruction. Can you blame them? The best thing that you can do is just not get pregnant if you don’t plan on making sure that your kid gets the kind of life they deserve.

I think that his most irresponsible act was not telling anyone about the creature. Once he realized that the creature was so violent and would committ murder, he had the responsibility to tell the authorities or somebody that could help him to stop the creature and protect the innocent civilians. If he had, maybe some of the people, like Henry, that did not deserve to die would not have been killed.

Victor’s most irresponsible act was abandoning his creation. At the beginning of the monsters time, it had potential to be good or evil contingent on the care it received when it was forming its own ideas. The responsibility of a creator or a parent is to nurture and have positive influence on what they bring into the world. Ultimately, Victor’s creation is Victor’s responsibility.

I think that Victors most irresponsible act was when he deserted the monster. He created the monster and knew that things could ahve gone wrong, and it should have been his responsibility to take care of him. When the monster killed William, Victor should have realized that deserting the monster and not telling anyone about him was a mistake. He could have recieved help from authorities, and the problem could have been delt with, instead, Justine was commited for the murder. Victor let the wrath of the monster fall upon someone else.
